The Narraganset would have been colonial settlers and drove out or genocided the Wampanoag except for help from those who would later betray them.

History's cruel.

Esp. to interpretations.

Remember, the area was devastated in the recent past by disease. Basque fishermen frequented the offshore waters. Others came though.

It's like Squanto learned enough "European" to be a useful go between because he'd been a European captive a time or two.

Note that the whole "bury a small fish" fertilizer technique was apparently only used by the people in that area and in Basque land. In other words, he was an intermediary and related a Basque technique to Englishmen refugees who had fled persecution and then sojourned for a while in the Netherlands.

So the Wampanoag helped some refugees. I thought that was an obligation and if you don't help refugees you're evil.
