Since Reagan in 1980, the Republican party has been pandering to those who were on the wrong sides of the Civil Rights movement, the feminist movement, the LGBTQ movement, the labor movement, etc. They've used dog whistles and other tactics to win over the fringe losers of the 60s/70s social progress movement. Reagan's Welfare Queen. Bush I with Willie Horton. Bush II with his stance against marriage equality.

After Bush II's humiliation in Iraq, Wall Street bailouts after the housing collapses, and two losses to a (gasp!) Black president, the pandered to Republican base wanted someone who lived and breathed their ugliness. They no longer wanted dog whistles. They wanted and got a bullhorn of foulness.

That pandered to base now controls that party in full. Legacy media can pretend all it wants to that there's still a sane Republican party, but that shipped has sailed. Maybe, just maybe, if they had been a little bit more brutally honest with the Republican base about the dog whistles, we would still have a somewhat decent party today.
