One of whom lied (and that could well have become clear in the interview). Oxford gets about 17,000 applications for 3,000 places each year, so there are bound to be some rejections that you can look back on in later years and say "maybe they would have done well". Ironically, JK Rowling's books caused a renaissance for privately-run boarding schools, a vital part of the 'snooty class system', as children decided they could be fun to go to after all.
