The biggest fear of the RW is that the people already support "socialism" in their broad support for Medicare. That is why they want to instill insecurity among the electorate about the "viability" of such social programs.
You raise a good point. Why are the red state people continuing to vote against their own economic interests? As we know from Thomas Frank's "What's the Matter with Kansas?" it is that social issues such as abortion and gay rights simply took over a whole section of the electorate in Kansas and cancelled out fading union, working class concerns. Why does this happen? How is it that people can just "give up" on their economic stake in society?
I ponder these questions.
