...if a person is both serious and patriotic, they would not be a republican.

In addition, "republicanism" itself, is, by it's very ideology, words, and actions, both entirely anti-patriotic and non-serious.

Maybe there were serious and patriotic republicans at one time in the past, but it is simply not a possibility today.
