I think Democrats had our own version of this appear on the horizon in '48 and '52, telling the extremists to take a number and get in line like everyone else, or take a hike. And they hiked off to the Dixiecrat party and eventual obscurity over the course of the next two Party Systems.

GOP *could* tell the maggots the same and come out of this with at least some sense of duty and obligation fulfilled, or just continue to do what they've been doing; curl up in a fetal position and cry about the mean-wing of their party as it eats their faces off.
