It's just describe as "CT" and X-rays are mentioned in passing. What about more variety of hardware-based approaches ? Effect of different wavelengths ? Is this phase-contrast X-ray imaging ? Have they tried terahertz imaging, including confocal imaging ? This has been used on ancient, faded documents and has located 'hidden' images in paintings -- was it tried here ?

Ultimately, these 3D-reconstruction algorithms will be essential, but some imaging techniques could give richer datasets to work with. Maybe they were used by others competing for the prize -- it would be interesting to know more. All the emphasis in the article at the link is on the data processing end of things.

Thanks for the post, Nevilledog. Your posts are usually very interesting but this seems to go beyond your usual topics. It would be nice to live a couple more decades and learn what "lost" manuscripts might be uncovered.
