it wasn't that long ago that there were loads of people who were happy to watch people die, in pain. With someone like Kirk, that bloodlust probably still hasn't gone away. Maybe the average American would now be repelled by watching an execution (especially a graphic one), and it would make them more anti-death-penalty, but a significant minority, including Kirk, would find joy in it. He is, as you say, a sick bastard.
