You were fortunate to get fiber run where you are. Still so many places without that and few cell towers. Some rely on satellite (TV and radio) but that doesn't help with streaming (although there was some older satellite streaming tech at some point that was pretty bad with lag - however the more recent infamous "Starlink" probably works better - at least to some degree, but still not ideal).
But AM has the penetration (FM has a limited range although I expect that digital AM probably has limits now too).

There are good reasons to keep local radio - whether AM or FM. Public safety alone is reason enough.
