The Fairness Doctrine provided adequate time and resources to refute lies that were being told.
Recently, we watched an older movie. "Shock and Awe," if you haven't seen it, get some popcorn and watch how we were LIED into invading Iraq and their WMD instead of going after Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan while he was still there.

We had to learn about it in high school civics class.
It is not considered necessary in today's world. Why would we want our citizens to understand how our government is supposed to work?
I contend that tossing the Fairness Doctrine was seen as necessary if you want to be able to lie with impunity.
How can you refute a lie if you don't own a newspaper, a TV network, or independent wealth? You can't if the Fairness Doctrine is gone.
I have often thought that we at DU should start at some point in the past and as a group of experts (interest observers). With shared experiences and knowledge lets, assemble a timeline of all the things the right wing has destroyed, implemented, and lied about with the purpose of getting us to this very spot in our history where no one knows how bad it is or what comes next.
Twenty-three years of purposely disassembling our democracy, and they aren't done yet.
For example:
1. Bush v Gore SCOTUS stealing an election.
2. Swiftboating John Kerry.
3. Replacing all the old voting equipment with Computers THAT CAN be hacked remotely.
4. Voter ID laws.
5. Gerrymandering
6. Citizen United SCOTUS decision gave us Dark money
7. False electors
8. J6
9. denying Obama a SCOTUS nominee
10. Stacking the courts
Any AI expert out there with the skills to "tell" AI to generate a sequential list starting at Bush v Gore and ending with tomorrow?
Anything that was purposed and supported by the rightwing /GOP/Conservatives to/for their advantage.
