They had decided, somehow, that a change in direction was needed. They were disturbed about Clinton's growing savvy about running a winning, progressive party and AL Gore was their whipping boy.
I think they're trying to prune the tendrils of progress again this time because it's simply not "perfect" enough for their tastes.
There's a world of evidence that they're both managed by especially stupid rocks. Maybe pebbles, even.
