"a nation that values education and thoughtful discourse" is wrong. We aren't. There are many of us who do, but it's not the whole country. And many of those who do value education only value it as a credential. If we as a nation truly valued education, I don't think we would have allowed the quality of it to degenerate so thoroughly.
