you are supposed to exhaust all other resources to pay. Same with "welfare" for the poor. You can't earn too much money, you can't own too many things, you can't own nice things. It is yet another way the system keeps the poor poor. I think it is also true of most long term care insurance policies (although there is usually a provision if the family caregiver lives in the house for the last two years - although that may be a state law that varies from state to state).
Remember, unless you are part of the inherited wealth pseudo aristocracy that isn't supposed to exist in this country, inheriting any wealth is against the American way so it shouldn't be allowed

Yes we do. In states that allow Medicaid it's a requirement to pay back from the estate.

Good point about compensation for family caregivers. Not sure what requirements should be, but it's doable.

Makes zero sense; Medicare eligibility doesn't have anything to do with assets.

If she goes into care in less than five years I think (nursing home), she will still lose the House.
