67. My friend's husband was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2016
Fri Mar 22, 2024, 09:10 PM
Mar 2024

He went into the ER because he thought he might have a kidney stone & was diagnosed within a few hours. The scans he had that ay showed it had spread to his liver & the ER doctor's only comment was "Your primary doctor can help you deal with the pain." They pretty much sent him home to die.

Not one to sit idle he was down at Mayo Clinic within in a week (the advantage of living just 80 miles from it). They managed to keep him going for over two years. At one point, the liver tumor was no longer visible. He was on chemo pretty much the whole time, but he tolerated it well and they were even able to do some of the traveling they had planned to do in retirement.

I have another friend who is currently in the same situation. Stage 4 pancreatic with spread to the liver, but her liver is now showing "no evidence of diease". Her doctors are optimistic that they can reach a point where her disease is more of a manageable chronic condition.

So, progress is being made with pancreatic cancer, but there's still a long way to go.
