Charleston WV is very nice, full of old homes with lots of charm and faded grandeur. I've driven through that area of West Virginia several times, but it was decades later than your story.
I live in Pittsburgh, and there's a lot of common culture in southwestern Pennsylvania, with West Virginia and western Maryland. Even parts of northeastern Ohio now that I think about it.
It breaks my heart that so much of our shared history is being torn down and stomped on by the current political atmosphere. The country we grew up in is sadly gone. Our grandchildren will never know the innocence and joy they missed out on.
