Colorado Springs Woman, Known As 'J6 Praying Grandma,' Convicted Of Jan 6 Charges [View all]

Afederal jury has rendered a verdict in the case of Rebecca Lavrenz, a resident of Falcon, who was found guilty of trespassing the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, amid the turmoil aimed at disrupting the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Lavrenz, widely recognized as "J6 Praying Grandma" on social media platforms, faced charges including entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly conduct within a restricted area, disorderly conduct within the Capitol premises, and participating in a parade or picket within the Capitol, all categorized as misdemeanors according to federal court records.

The trial began on March 25 and was held in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. A 12-person jury deliberated for three days before returning a judgment. As her attorney, Roger Roots, revealed, Lavrenz's convictions led to plans for an appeal despite her steadfast claim that she was guided by divine inspiration during the Capitol intrusion. Roots raised issues to the jury instructions regarding Lavrenz's activities' application of the First Amendment.

Roots said they were unhappy with the decision, saying, "We are very disappointed in the verdict." He emphasized his belief that the jury instructions were inadequate and declared his desire to use the appeal process to overturn Lavrenz's convictions.

Lavrenz, a 71-year-old great-grandmother who owned a bed and breakfast northeast of Colorado Springs, was taken into custody in Denver on December 19, 2022, after the FBI received warnings indicating that she had taken part in the Capitol hack. During her later conversations with federal investigators, Lavrenz admitted to spending around 10 minutes on Capitol property. This account was supported by security film that showed her among the crowd of rioters who were breaking and entering the building illegally.
