In reply to the discussion: How do I file taxes if my computer won't allow me [View all]Earth-shine
(4,044 posts)22. I agree with your post. Taxes are intended for the poor.
I said wife's accountant, but it's probably more like "tax preparer". These people can save you more than they cost by finding deductions you don't know about.
I was suggesting you contact the IRS to see if they can help.
New York state has invented tax charges retroactively from years ago on my wife's business. One year she owes nothing. The next she owes back taxes from ten years ago plus interest.
She received a notification by mail from them that she owed about $500. She called to discuss. They said she owes more than four thousand! They are making it up.
The word is that NYS is the worst place to incorporate because they do make-up charges.

Worst case and assuming you've paid most/all taxes due, file an extension to sort it out.

If you don't traditionally owe and you know what forms you need, it shouldn't be too hard

I tried that mentioned tax service. It cost me almost a year and a half and $1600 for a real accountant to fix.

It might only cost $100 more to use a real accountant. They'll file for an extension and give an est of payment due.

The IRS volunteers are likely overworked. I'm sure they're good, if you have minimal deductions.

There's two free programs: One for 60 plus and one for those who earn $64,000 or less
