And he did it, because he was terrified of what was going to happen to him otherwise.
By that time, the whole world knew that the Red Army was going to get to Berlin well ahead of the Allies, and Hitler had every reason to assume the Russians would deal with with him very, VERY harshly if they got the chance. Stalin was mightily pissed off at the havoc the Germans had wreaked on his country (with good reason), he had a huge score to settle with Der Fuehrer, and he was NOT known for his kindness or his compaseion.
If it had been the Allies that were practically on Hitler's doorstep instead of the Russians, I'm not sure he would have taken that way out; but that wasn't the case. He knew damned well that the Red Army was about to take Berlin, and if they found Hitler alive, he knew he would face much worse consequences than a mere trial followed by a very public execution. He wanted to avoid that, for obvious reasons.
I honestly don't know what any of that has to do with TSF's situation, and I still stand by what I said about him not being willing to "play crazy" in court. As I said, I can't imagine Trump pretending to be mentally incapacited. That goes against everything I know about him and about narcissistic personality disorder. I could more easily imagine him doing what Hitler did, IF the circumstances were remotely comparable, but they aren't. Trump isn't facing anything CLOSE to what Hitler would have faced, no matter how many crimes he may eventually be convicted of. Not in any way, shape, or form.
