It was to hide the Stormy Daniels issue so soon before the election, just after the "grab them by the ___" Hollywood Access tape came out.

If it had been marked down in trump org books AND the campaign books as an election expense, which it was and should have been so marked, ... well, it would have been noticed. He placed himself between a rock and a hard place by his past actions. Either he had to cop to using a sex worker or he would get revealed as using a sex worker. So to avoid both outcomes he committed over 40 crimes. In the end, he committed the crime AND got revealed anyway.
