7. If I remember the rules correctly, the VP would NOT automatically become the presidential nominee

unless the slot became empty AFTER an election which they had won---- and then they would be sworn in as President on January 20th.... so they would in fact become the President-elect if it happened after the election.

If the presidential nomination is vacated between the party convention and the election, the Republican National Committee would be responsible for choosing a new presidential nominee.
(They could of course choose to elevate the Vice Presidential nominee to the presidential nomination, but I would consider that unlikely. My personal bet would be on Ron DeSantis.)

If the nomination is vacated before the convention, then of course the party delegates would choose another nominee.

(This whole discussion came up here a few months ago, 'what happens if Trump dies'...)
