13. When someone tries to tell me

that the US is not a democracy but a Republic: "When the founding fathers used the word Republic, what they meant is what we now call a Representative Democracy.

"It's technally true that we are not a democracy as the word was used in Greece, direct democracy, every citizen votes on every issue always. But even in the 1770s, can you imagine what would never get done because it took to long to get votes on every single tiny detail from every single citizen? And today -even though we have the internet, and might be able to colect the votes timely, counting them is a different story. Direct democracy can only work for an entity the size of a small city, preferably one in which those who are allowed to vote have no day jobs. And that isn't really democratic at all.

Almost always they shut up after my first paragraph. Occasionally I have to go into the second. I've never had to finish it before they do shut up.
