and when their son was about five, his grandmother asked him if he wanted to learn Japanese. He was excited, and the first thing he wanted to learn was "God damn." She said there was no way to say that in Japanese (at least not exactly that, - I have no doubt actual Japanese words are many and colorful.) He responded, "Well, what the hell good is it then?" and that was the end of that.
When he told me the story I said, "well, there'll never be any question about his paternity."
