1. I get a lot more tolerant when I cut 'em off at the pass

meaning that I go all Emily Post, refusing to discuss religion or politics, two subjects on which acquaintances are generally WRONG (harrumph!) and which I'd really rather not know about.

It helps that I live in NM and I've never seen a TFG yard sign or bumper sticker and I've never even seen one of those stupid hats in the wild, although I'm sure they're visible over toward the border with Texas.

I agree with Ms. Post that some subjects are just not fit for discussion with relative strangers and should be avoided. Other people are a lot easier to get along with if your illusions remain intact.
