Millions of people saw his game show that depicted him as an astute businessman, surrounded by competent people in an opulent office. Most people don't follow politics like DUers do. They may watch the occasional network news shows, but they don't know what Trump is actually like.

They think he is smart, and pretty much just like themselves, except that he is a multi-billionaire.

And they think Trump manages many extremely profitable businesses, like Trump casinos, Trump University, Trump steaks, and Trump Airlines. If you don't follow the news, like most people, you would not know that all of Trumps businesses fail.
