In reply to the discussion: Rape more Common than Smoking in the US [View all]Sekhmets Daughter
(7,515 posts)are raped by total strangers. I did some research on the subject back in the early 80s.... Back then it was believed that fathers and stepfathers who molest children in their own households, do so with the tacit approval of the mother. Think about that....this is a societal problem and its not just the men who are to blame.
Yes, I'm sure if a poll were taken here the numbers would be horrifying.
But there is so much more to the issue than just blaming men. I am not, and never have been, a fan of soap operas. Back when I was pregnant with my first child all the buzz was about General Hospital and Luke raping Laura....I was appalled...little did I know it would get worse. There was a followup romance and then the hype over their wedding set new records for hyperbole and poor taste. What message did that send to young girls and boys? As my children became older my daughters had friends whose mothers watched the soaps and allowed the girls to watch as well. Although I made it known that I didn't want my daughters watching the soaps, one mother decided to ignore my wishes entirely. I'm sure they were all entertained by getting one over on me....until I found out, went over there picked up the girls and let the mother know just what I thought of her. They were not allowed to go there any longer, and when I was finished with the mother, they were no longer welcome there. One problem solved. I'm talking 8 and 9-year-olds here.
We have Toddlers & Tiaras...is there anything worse than a mother exploiting her own child? Turning her into a little sex kitten at 4?
I am not much surprised by the male push back. They have been getting mixed messages for a long, long time. I am surprised that we have made so little progress as a society to protect all of our citizens... old, young and in between...male and female.
