1. Walz as CSM

There is only one "Sergeant Major of the Army", but Tim Walz was not one. He was a Command Sergeant Major (CSM) in the Minnesota National Guard. There are about 6,500 CSMs in the Army. Commands down to battalion level can have a CSM. He did serve in the position of CSM, but retired before completing all of the course work at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. Therefore he retired as a Master Sergeant (on pay grade below Sergeant Major)
