In reply to the discussion: Trump supporters go to Star Trek convention. It didn't go well [View all]SpankMe
(3,666 posts)As a WWII aviation history buff, I like going to air shows that showcase refurbished WWI planes. Most of the participants at these ostensibly non-partisan events are right-wingers who openly display pro-Trump and nasty anti-Biden paraphernalia. I keep my mouth shut and never engage them. But they express threatening thoughts and violent rhetoric that makes me very uncomfortable. At times, I don't feel safe.
An acquaintance of mine - who is quite progressive, but also a gun hobbyist - says that gun shows are similarly problematic and are worse than the air shows.
My friend and I have resigned ourselves to the fact that certain of our hobby interests overlap with and fall within interest areas dominated by the conservative mindset. It is what it is, and we can still enjoy these interests with caution.
Conservatives have to understand that SciFi, Star Trek and Star Wars fans, and industries aligned with Hollywood, are going to be dominated by liberals and that - if they, too, are Star Trek fans - they'll just have to grin and bear it just like my friend and I do.
