(12,698 posts)Your stereotype of "them" is as accurate as their stereotype of "us." I think we'd better start working to reach across divides if we want to actually make any progress as a country on the things we agree on -- and there is a lot of common ground.
The "Reds" who show up at BraverAngels.org events are choosing to risk talking -- and listening. And if they are willing, I think more of us ought to be willing. It's not all peaches and cream. It's uncomfortable, infuriating, and very, very, difficult at times. But i've come out of every event happy that I attended.
And another thing. I didn't join to "try to understand." I joined because I didn't like what I was becoming. I joined because I felt sick about my own anger and hate. The only thing feeding my hate for "them" did for me was to cut me off from my own humanity. I joined for myself. Not for "them."
