(17,627 posts)I do have one grandchild and she is absolutely beautiful and kind and smart as a whip. My daughter had IVF in order to have a child. She will be the only grandchild I have. Having said that, I don't think my role as a grandmother is to take care of my grandchild. Quite frankly, I have enough to do with my own life and responsibilities and volunteer work and just plain fun things to do and occasionally some travel.
I had two children and they didn't know their grandparents. My parents died before I had the children so I had no one to help me with all that is involved in childrearing. It was 24/7/365 until they were old enough to occasionally stay home by themselves for a few hours. I enjoyed being a mother and always wanted to be but I am so over the responsibility of that. When other grandmothers talk about how they watch their grandchildren, it never sounds like they truly enjoy it but feel like they should. I just tell them that I don't want to be tied down in my retirement years. At least I'm honest about it.
Fuck Vance and the patriarchy!
