Why was there such a thriving medieval spice trade? When one looks at the old herbal medicinal formulas of the period, as I have, one finds that many ingredients in these formulas were common cooking spices - so, these exotic spices were used not just to spice up their food, but also to make medicines as well. For example, I learned in Chinese herbology class in acupuncture school that Cloves could be used to stop hiccups. I had a hard time believing that until I got some bad hiccups in my friend's health food store, with a jar of Cloves on the spice rack nearby. I ate one Clove, and whamo - my hiccups were GONE!
