23. A lot of legit churches provide social services.

I volunteered with a refugee resettlement office for years. All done through a church, not local or state government. A friend with a daycare couldn't pay her electric bill one winter. Catholic social services stepped in to pay it. Many of the tent villages in our area are at churches. There's much more.

It's because of things like this that churches get tax relief. Maybe it shouldn't be a blanket exemption, but a lot of social safety net would vanish if all churches suddenly got taxed. Should they have to prove that they provide them? Probably, but now you are adding an expensive administrative layer to audit it.

These things are never as simple as they sound.
