are still picked by hand, especially tomatoes and asparagus. Berries too.

Plus at least 1 bean that I know of... soybeans. Not picked by hand, but by combine. However before the combine can harvest the soybeans a person must walk up and down every row and cut down the milkweeds and other sticky weeds by hand with a machete. Why? Because the milk from the milkweed will coat the soybeans in the combine harvester and ruin the beans. Sure you can try to wash the beans but it is difficult. You can apply more weed killer but that is expensive and usually toxic. The best thing is to hire a crew to walk the soybean fields and let them hack down the weeds before the combine. Usually a week or at most 2 before harvest. How do I know this? When I was 15 and 16 years old I used to do this job. Hot, dangerous, and mostly thankless job.

Good luck doing these sorts of jobs without immigrant labor. Mostly undocumented. Cost of Apples and cherries and asparagus and, yes, soybeans... all headed higher. That is if they can find anyone willing to do stoop labor for even $15/hour. Chances are the farmers will not find too many takers at that wage. Well, they will find some willing to try... for 1 day.

Working in August in Kansas cutting weeds by hand out of a field where it is the worst jungle up to your chest and blazing hot on your head and shoulders... with snakes and insects... it is not a job for most people, ever.
