I believe this is a rare case of what happens when two people can rightfully fear for their safety from the other in a place they have a right to be. Martin may have had reason to fear for his safety from Zimmerman, and Zimmerman may have had reason to fear from Martin.
Yes, the police told Zimmerman they "did not need" him to follow Martin, but Zimmerman was under no obligation to follow the dispatcher's suggestion, or even an order for that matter.
We may consider it foolish for Zimmerman to take it upon himself to investigate people he considers suspicious in his neighborhood, but it was not illegal for him to do so.
And Martin was clearly aware of being followed and there was a confrontation between Zimmerman and Martin.
We don't know who initiated the confrontation. We may never know.
