In reply to the discussion: Can't afford a smartphone? That's going to cost you. [View all]Celerity
(54,961 posts)4. You are missing the point. Many things will become (many already have) app-ONLY. Here in Sweden, in order to use
the BankID identification/verification system, you (in almost all cases) have to have a smartphone to use the app, as they have phased out almost all desktop use of the system several years ago.
Without BankID, you are likely well fucked, as SO many things require it, from simple transactions to identification-dependent access to sites, including medical and governmental ones.
BankID is an electronic identification system in Sweden. With a usage rate of 94% among smartphone users, it is the single largest such service in Sweden by a large margin, and is administered by Finansiell ID-Teknik BID AB that is owned by several Swedish and Scandinavian banks. In 2022, Bank-id had about 8.4 million active users and was supported by over 6000 web services. Only individuals with a Swedish personal identity number can acquire Bank-id.
Example of usage areas are Swish payments, bank login, login to e-government, and access to medical records via Vårdguiden 1177.

I have no control over the systemic roll-out and use of technology. I am leaving no one behind.
