(1,009 posts)There's no need to get rid of them. There's a need to control them in a real, significant manner. That means: no guns in a house (or a gun in a house, with a max of 6 rounds), background checks, repeated training and testing, new technology such as biometric (hand print) unlocking of guns, no semi-automatics or fully automatics stored anywhere but at gun ranges. (I don't see any use for semi-automatics other than the entertainment value of blasting off 10 rounds in a few seconds, so the only place where that can happen is at a gun range.) Oh, and tax ammunition at 100% of the cost of the ammunition.
Those nuts who think the government (ours or some others) is out to get them, well, they will have to bend a bit. We will make "well-regulated" militia to mean the ability to run a 6-minute mile, 40 continuous pushups, and 95% accuracy at shooting ranges, tested every 6 months. And then, your guns are still stored at a local armory.
