I hope this interpretation is correct. It could be.

I had a more depressing interpretation that his megalomania has reached a point where he sees himself as above God, and that hand-on-the-bible stuff is for the little people.

His administration will need Christianity because of its emphasis on suffering and sacrifice, because his core voters will be experiencing a lot of both and will need something to get them through and explain to them why they are suffering.
