Google will rename the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" on its maps [View all]
Google will rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America on its maps for users in the United States after the change formally goes into effect, the company said Monday.
People in Mexico will see the Gulf of Mexico, while those outside the two countries will see both names, Google said in a post on the social media platform X. Describing this as a long-standing practice, Google said: When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names.
GThe move comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week to change the name. On Friday, the Interior Department said it had made the change and is working to update the nomenclature in the Geographic Names Information System.
Trumps executive order also reverts the name of North Americas tallest peak, Denali in Alaska, back to Mount McKinley. Google said this name change will also be reflected.
