Today's Americans are tied down to their homes, children's schools, or jobs. Before the introduction of the IRS and SSN system, Americans moved around the country in search of opportunity or escaping a debt. "GTT" was a common abbreviation for a shylock whose prey fled to the Lone Star Republic ('Gone to Texas'). If not for being stuck, we would be seeing a massive internal migration within the US from Red States to Blue States. Some DU-ers have already split for greener pastures overseas.
