5. Longtime Houston mayor Sylvester Turner dies at 70, months after winning U.S. House seat

My former father-in-law worked for Sylvester. There is a concept in palliative care called the "last good day/hour", Slyvester visited my father-in-law in the hospice on his last good day. First the security team came by and checked things out and then Slyvester came in and spent a good half hour with my former father-in-law. It was sweet. The next day my father in law declined drastically and passed a couple of days later.

Turner, who served two terms as mayor from 2016-2024, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for his first term in November. He filled the seat previously occupied by Sheila Jackson Lee, who died in July.

He was in Washington D.C. Tuesday night for the State of the Union, according to his X account.

Before his tenure as mayor, Turner served in the Texas House of Representatives for nearly 27 years. He had also run for mayor in 1991 and 2003.

This means that the Democrats will be down a house seat until Abbott calls a special election.
