6. I'd like to become educated

I grew up with the term "transexual" and have no idea what "transgender" means. The word "trans" AFAIK is an abbreviation of "transition" or "transitioning," which leads me to believe its meant to describe someone who is in the process of transitioning from one gender to the other. But I have no idea. And I've never met one so I can't ask anyone I know. I'd love to be enlightened.
