(2,389 posts)And this is one type of average American family.
I live in a rural area where lots of people have guns. I don't have a gun--and even if I did, I could never bring myself to shoot an animal. I couldn't even stand to go fishing. But other people hunt, and hunting keeps wild animal populations in check so that animals don't die a slow death of starvation.
But these are kind people who have helped me clear snow out of the driveway when there was too much for my little snowthrower to handle. They're the people who let us take cover in their basements during tornado warnings, because our house has no basement. They're the people who have mowed my lawn for free, when I got hurt and couldn't do it myself. These people are so much kinder than the people I used to live around in the city--people who freaked out over guns, but would let you die on the street rather than do anything to help.
(And yes, that very nearly happened to my uncle. He collapsed near his car, and people just walked right over him. He managed to crawl into his car and park it sideways on the road, to force somebody to call the police--who called an ambulance, and saved his life.)
But in the small town where I live, and where guns are just another tool, there's virtually no crime. And people help each other.
My friends and neighbors who own guns are not "frothing at the mouth to kill somebody". They're just hunters and/or collectors of guns. They're not even survivalists--they're barely prepared for tornadoes, let alone any apocalyptic breakdown of society, LOL.
