That's from the last paragraphs - where a (different) lawyer couple, who'd decided to help an undocumented contractor, and thought they might end up doing it again for someone else, decided to do it on an old, separate computer from their main legal work. And their (college-age) son asked if what they were doing is legal (yes, it is), and then posed the question in this reply title. And the only answer is "this is the kind of country we live in now".
