Police and military units around the world use these positions to keep prisoners off-base, disadvantaged, unable to plan their own movement, etc. Its a control method, a come-along technique, although it is obviously much more substantial than something like a wrist lock or arm bar. The human spirit is infinitely strong and they are trying to break as many of these men as possible in an effort to exert and maintain control. Some of it is physical, most of it is psychological.
