(15,695 posts)17. When I turned 60, I went from contract worker to the Federal Government.
I was already starting to see ageism rearing it's ugly head, and with 20 years military service, a younger spouse on SSDI, and grandchildren to raise, I figured I could continue to work to 70 without worrying about "ageing out" and end up with a good pension as well as social security to carry us through the rest my years.
But under this regime, I'm not so sure. There's about a $12k annual pension difference between 25 and 30 years, and about $75k final difference on the TSP (if it doesn't tank) so it's really pretty important for my family to last at least five more years.

Ageism is real and it is here on DU, too. I get so sick of the generalizations based on age.
