I mostly blame the extractive energy interests, and their decades-long jihad against climate and environmental science, for the current efforts to destroy scientific research. They set the tone years ago, funded anti-science hucksters and charlatans, disseminated their lies and conspiracies, and successfully turned "science" into some sort of moral relativism.
