(7,670 posts)half of it was gimped because my vertical resolution wasn't high enough on this particular machine, which is the machine I use to test operating systems. Metro applications wouldn't launch, my Y resolution is only 600 so the apps complained that they needed 768, which was annoying, once I got to the traditional desktop, it was slightly better, but frankly was just an annoyance. Bear in mind that this is a machine I bought with Windows 7 preinstalled. It was slow as molasses, and Windows 8 was only slightly better. I finally chucked both and installed Lubuntu(not a typo, a Unity-free desktop variant of Ubuntu).
Right now, I'm going to wait, hopefully the first service pack will allow you to disable the start screen entirely, and, if not restore the start menu, then at least start with the desktop and a variant of "start menu search".
Also, I don't understand the arbitrary need to fuck up metro apps that badly with that type of resolution restriction, don't they use larger text and shit? Hell, a low resolution makes that blockier, but not like the apps wouldn't work. Makes no sense.
