I don't think it's a function of environmental responsibility to use less gas because one has built redundant systems.

I oppose using any gas, any and all fossil fuels.

Peak energy demand on any grid in the US takes place in the early evening. The sun isn't shining then. Building two systems, redundant systems, is not just economically foolish, it's environmentally appalling.
