I have no Windows 8 experience, but on my Windows 7 laptop, I left click the Start button and left click Notepad from the list of programs that appears. Notepad opens. IOW, I can do in 2 clicks what you say you can do in 3 with Windows 8.
Also, I can use my method even if I have a zillion other windows open. I don't know if yours would require more clicking to get to an empty part of the Start screen.
I admit my complete ignorance of Windows 8, but I'm trying to keep an open mind, and I don't understand your comment. Thanks for any clarification.
