(10,749 posts)My Windows 7 computer crashed last week. Hard drive problem. Yes, Mac fans, I know I should get a Mac, but it ain't going to happen, so Windows it is.
While the computer is in the shop I've been using a new laptop with Windows 8. What a magnificently glorious piece of crap. MS took something that worked pretty well and took a hatchet to it and prayed that the pieces would fall back into place resembling an operating system.
What took one step previously now takes multiple. Before, when I had to open a program I clicked on the icon on the quick launch bar. Now I have to go to a hot corner, click on the start menu and then scroll a foot or more to the icon for the program. And then, god forbid I do other stuff while I'm working in that program. I have to hunt and peck my way from the Start screen tiles to my desktop and then hope that stuff shows up,
And have you noticed that you can't search for anything in the Windows app store" All searching has to take place in the search box, also accessible via the hot corner. And the app - at least the one I'm working with, Overdrive Media console - doesn't behave the same way the Overdrive program works in Windows 7 and previous. So, not only did Windows 8 take an os and screw it up, it took other programs along with it.
Also, 20 years after MS-DOS, does it seem odd to you that you actually have to search for the shut down button? And I'm still not sure how I managed to come across te control panel. I couldn't find it - still can't - when I needed it, but at some point it showed up unexpectedly.
This little exercise demonstrated a couple of things.
First, I will not use Windows 8 until absolutely forced to, when Windows 7 is no longer supported.
Second, I really don't like laptops - by the way, the trackpad on the new Toshiba Satellite froze after only two days of use. Guess where this machine is going once the desktop is returned.
I am now going to read the other rants. They might actually help me calm down.
