My family has roots from Puerto Rico to Wisconsin to the Colony of New Hampshire and across the sea to Jolly Ol' England (and Spain).
My sisters are eligible for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution -- meaning we can trace our ancestry to pre-colonial times. Still, people are dumbfounded when I have had to explain to my fellow Americans that I and they are citizens of the United States of America.
So, the fall of 2024 was an awful time on all levels. People who think my Puerto Rican family and friends are like "immigrant garbage" are ignorant in mind and empty in heart. When such sentiments come from a candidate or a sitting President of the United States, they sicken me -- and energize me.
My father, his father, both born on PR, and his father, born in Wisconsin, wore the uniforms of the US Navy and US Army and US Army. They each -- as have their uncles and cousins -- swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, even if it cost them their lives. That is unlike Donald J Trump, who did all he could to avoid military service or any kind of service to humanity.
Thank you for caring about Puerto Rico and our fellow citizens, UTUSN. I'd certainly appreciate hearing more support for the island from Democrats in general and all DU in particular.
